Will be campaigning this years' Classic Car Series at Sepang International Circuit in 2 race prepared minis this year. Feel free to check this page regularly for race updates and new pictures.

Last year's winning mini has been fully stripped and will have better weight distribution after being fitted with a race fuel tank from ATL, USA.

Round 1

The first race of the season was disasterous after a chain of events resulted in the 2 class A leaders colliding in a big way! The race minis of Andrew and Haji Farid were neck to neck from the start and the tussle was the highlight of the classic car race. However, on lap 8, one of the 'hybrid' class C car drivers unwittingly caused Haji Farid's mini to spin and plough into the rear right of Andrew's mini.

After setting the class pole in the wet, Andrew was getting used to his new set up and wider tyres. It's such a shame that the weekend ended the way it did. Hopefully, we can somehow turn this disaster around by improving on the rear end set-up while working on the damage.

On the brighter side, we've managed to test many recent developments and improvements to the mini  this round. Pics to follow soon.

Classic Car Club of Hong Kong (CCCHK) Race Series 2007
Sepang Malaysia – Round 2 – Race Report

New records, new faces, hero’s of yesteryear, bruised and inflated ego’s, unpredictable weather, scrapes and silverwear all featured in Round 2 of CCCHK’s Race Series held over the weekend of May 26-27, 2007, on the technically challenging South Circuit, Sepang Malaysia.

The South Circuit, the faster of the 2 circuits had been recently resurfaced creating greasy and unpredictable conditions, but as the rubber went down, Clive Bate’s 2003 “10.4” was soon under threat, Nick Thomas (Porsche) setting the new benchmark at 1.08.858 in Race 2.

Qualifying on Day 1 saw Simon Westbrook (TVR) set the pace in Class O, Ian Geekie in his immaculate Datsun 240Z setting the bar in Class B, Andrew Crombie in his rebuilt Mini qualifying first in Class A, and the welcome return of Mathan S in setting the standard in Class C.  Performance of the day though belongs to Bertie and David McCrory (and Jerry Kwok) for having their car rushed from Port Klang, offloaded at 2pm, through scrutineering in record time, and onto the track setting a very creditable time in the process – well done all concerned!

Day 2, a hot but overcast day, was to see some eventful racing.  In Race 1 with a last minute downpour, cars formed up, mostly on slicks, seeing Gerry Kipling’s BMW spinning in the tight link section to turn 8 causing problems at the start, and sidelining Andrew Crombie in the process.

In Class O Simon also had difficulty in keeping the car on the track, with Nick and Joe Sevack (Porsche) having an epic struggle for the race win, Joe’s heroic lunge in turn 13 sadly seeing him retire, allowing Daniel Bilski (Porsche), who set quickest lap, to take second, Simon sneaking it from Paul Winkelmann (Caterham) at the last corner, to take 3rd, while John Haddon (911) in the beautifully restored Porsche refused to let a penalty board get in the way of his welcome return to the Classics.

In Class B Ian secured the win, Hj. Mohd Farid winning Class A in his Mini, a great reward for the many long hours spent repairing the car following major damage from Round 1, getting the better of Class leading Koh Hark Hwa (Honda).  S. Mathan sensibly electing wet tires, took Class C honours from Chia Poo Teng’s Mini V-Tech.

Thankfully for Race 2 dry conditions returned, Simon taking the Class win in Class O, getting the better of Nick’s failing engine, Daniel taking 3rd.  In Class B Ian continued his relentless form of late, Gerry and Azman Ramly taking 2nd and 3rd slots.  In Class A Andrew (with much help from Brian and David Chan) managed to get the damaged Mini back on track, and record his First Class win, Koh Hark Hwa, and Mohd Zaaim Abu Bakar completing the top 3.  In Class C S. Mathan continued his winning ways, Chow taking 2nd, and Izmi Marican bringing the Toyota home in a strong 3rd.

Ian Geekie, closely followed by Nick Thomas lead the overall 2007 championship, but with 4 rounds to go the position remains wide open.  Round 3 will be held on the North Circuit on the weekend of July 28-29 giving you all plenty of time to regroup for the challenges ahead.

Round 3 - 2 outright wins!

Andrew drove well with good race strategy this weekend.  The competition has improved tremendously with the Class A Honda pressurising Andrew through the first few corners. Farid's mini, however, failed to appear after breaking a crankshaft before the weekend.

Many thanks to Minispares and KAD for timely despatch of parts that saw our mini qualifying class pole and winning outright in class twice this weekend despite a very rough start this season. Brake issues have been settled with the right compound pads. Steering has also become razor sharp after installing a brand new set of the latest spec magnesium F1 style rims from KAD.

Duty calls next round and I'll probably be stuck on one of the neighbouring islands but the mini is well preped to do battle again during next month's Merdeka Endurance weekend.
